Thank you for the great tour!! My son and daughter loved the tour too. Usually they don't like to walk too much, but they said the time went so fast because of their great interest in what was being said. Thank you William for letting me say a few words about Thomas Chambers Howell, who was an owner with Jones in the pharmacy building. I will get my info together in the future about him, and W.D. Howell. Thanks for the interest and I will contact you as you asked. I have to say three things occurred during our time that day of the tour in Oregon City. Earlier in the day we were on a tour up in the Mcloughlin house with the ranger there. We went in the back door from the street, and moved across the house to the original front door where the ranger was showing us pictures of how the house was moved up the hill, and as we were listening, there was a noise back behind us. It was back by the original door he had brought us in. Later I asked my brother if he had heard it and he said he thought it was from a chair by the door. It sounded like a small metal object dropping down to the floor maybe a couple of feet. If it came from the chair, no one was anywhere by it. We all were 20-25 feet away from that area.  I didn't notice the chair, but maybe it wasn't set properly and maybe it just resettled itself. Or was it something in the house telling us that it was there? I don't know if there is any activity in that house or not. Now later on that day when we went on the lower Oregon City tour with William, there is something else that occurred. As William was leading us through that pedestrian tunnel, I could feel my lower legs feeling very heavy. My upper legs did not feel that way, but as we walked through the tunnel it felt like it was harder to walk. What hit me was that AFTER we got to the other end of the tunnel, William mentioned something about someone saying it felt like walking through jello to them I believe another time...I thought to myself, WOW...that could be how it felt to me too, or I was thinking it felt as I would imagine slogging through water or mud up to the knees...the feeling of wanting to move your feet faster, but can't without a lot more effort.  As I was moving through the tunnel I was looking down at the floor as I was walking and it just felt like the tunnel was becoming smaller or closing in kind of around me. Just a weird feeling for me. The last thing that I felt as a feeling was that tingling feeling that occurs up and down your spine when you get real excited about something. As we where starting the walking tour up the street this feeling hit me as I started thinking about how I could be walking in the exact same steps that my ancestors made along the same exact street when they lived and worked there 100 and more years ago. Like I said, I enjoy learning about what and where my ancestors my have experienced during their lives, so all the info given about the town was great.  Thanks again!!

Rocky... I took the Downtown Oregon City tour with William as our guide, what a wonderful job he did. I was very impressed by the knowledge he had about Oregon City history, you can tell he has done a lot of research. One of my favorite stops we made along the tour was the bridge (or in this case under the bridge) before he had told us about the shadows I was looking back and I thought I saw a shadow on the right hand side about three feet from the ground. I’m really looking forward to taking the McLoughlin Tour soon. Thank you and our guide William for putting these tours together, the tour was well worth the $12.00.

Hi Rocky…  I’m not sure if William mentioned my name to you but I went on the Halloween ghost tour with a friend in his group.  I truly, truly enjoyed his story-telling and wonderful tour! I told him I would give you both a call regarding our Paranormal Research group. There are about 5 of us girls. William mentioned you two might be interested in joining or being a part of our group when you can devote your time. Tell William I’m so sorry for not getting back sooner.  The holidays were nuts and I had a move right in the middle of the holidays so it is amazing I’m still alive today. Ha!

We had such a great time on the McLoughlin tour last Saturday that we will be setting up a downtown tour in the next couple months, if you would be able to. The tour was so informative and creepy, just perfect! Anyways, we had a great time, and let us know if you have any historical information of our area.

We had such a great time. Thanks you so much! The kids couldn't stop talking about it when we got back. BY THE WAY… I have a key to the bell tower! So, whenever you and Rocky want to swing by the church, I would be happy to let you in. I will speak with Shauna and some of the school staff to get stories of experiences they have had here at St. John's.  Again, thank you for both for everything. We look forward to attending another tour. God Bless and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

My husband & I had a great time and learned a lot from what you talked about. We were the couple with the canes and my crazy husband talking about your money book... You asked people to mention if they ever had strange things happen. This may not be much but I lost my Mom 2 years ago and I think of her often. Some times when I am going thru her things I will find pennies. Our just out of the clear blue I can have her on my mind a penny will show up in crazy places. My husband wanted to know if you knew much about the Sellwood district - and the Old Oaks Pioneer Church that was floated down river from O.C. Milwaukie area to where it is now. His Mother's maiden name was Sellwood and her family owned a lot of land in the Sellwood district. Reverend John Sellwood was a great grandfather to my husband. Thanks again for the awesome tour and we look forward to it again next year.

Hi Rocky! My wife Sarah and I (I was the Freemason) greatly enjoyed the ghost tour through downtown O.C. so much that we plan to take the McLoughlin tour next Friday. We are also quite pleased we voted for you, it’s good to know that there is someone on the city council has such passion for preserving what is left of this city’s rich history. You asked for comments on the tour. Below is what I posted on my facebook account. You may quote from it if you would like, If you have a FB account feel free to "friend" me. Hope this finds you well.

WALKING WITH THE SPIRITS IN
DOWNTOWN OREGON CITY

At the end of the 2000 mile long
Oregon Trail lays Oregon City. This is where the first pioneers settled, in what became the first city in the United States west of the Rocky Mountains. It is where I attend Multnomah No.1, the first Masonic Lodge west of the Rockies. Where my wonderful wife Sarah and I call home, and it is also possibly the most haunted city on the west coast. Several buildings in historic Oregon City’s downtown area, many of which are over 100 years old, have at least one report of paranormal activity attached to them. When Sarah and I, who share a love for the history of our adopted home town, found out about a tour that took you through the eerie depths of its paranormal underbelly we knew immediately we had to go and see it for ourselves. It was pretty spooky walking down Main Street at dusk as our guides, clad in turn of the century dress, recounted tales of Oregon City residents who died long ago but were still visiting our current neighbors on a regular basis. Many of these stories were not just legends passed down from generation to generation through word of mouth, but actual personal encounters which our guides claimed to have experienced firsthand. Both of our guides are descendent of families that have called Oregon home for several generations. One of them was our own City Commissioner. Their command of our city’s history was impressive and certainly lent to their credibility, but most unnerving of all was the unflappable sincerity with which they told these stories. It might sound crazy to some, but it was apparent that these men believed what they were saying, and were not the least bit shy about saying it. One of our guides spoke fondly of a little red haired boy named Carl whom he routinely "ran into" while growing up in Oregon City. He spoke of him as if he was a childhood friend. Carl had died more than a century before, but is often seen running and playing around the Oregon City elevator and the Grand Staircase. As twilight gave way to night the tales became punctuated by street lamps that seemed to go off on cue and come back on at the mention of the long departed owner one particular building or another. With the crescent moon growing more predominant in the eastern sky we descended a steep and ancient iron stairway that led down under an overpass and to the edge of the Willamette River. One hundred years ago this was the site of a pier where riverboats stopped to pick up passengers and cargo headed north to Portland. Today it has been replaced by the dirty and noisy overpass above our heads. No sign remains of the riverboat stop or the pier that once stood here, but you will hear reports of a woman standing where it used to be, seemingly suspended above the rivers wake. By nightfall we found ourselves being lead through the back allies which are far more ominous when traveled on foot in the darkness than when seen from a car from traveling on the road up the hill. The tour ended with us walking through a tunnel cut through the side of the bluff that leads to a dimly lit winding trail up the side of the bluff and ends at the top the hill. The history learned tonight left us with a sense of awe, the ghost stories were intertwined with that history with history left us with a sense of wonderment but the admonition we received from our guides before we retired to our homes, well that left me with a tingling in my stomach that is still there as I write this several hours later. The tour was two hours long and only covered downtown at the base of the hill. We enjoyed it so much that we plan to go on the other half next weekend. It covers the McLoughlin district at the top of the bluff, where the houses that were built by the cities founders still stand. We might even walk home in the dark. I highly recommend going on this tour if you are in the area.

My daughter and I went on the ghost tour a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it very much. I took my husband to the Mcloughlin house this past Sunday to show him the face on the tree of John McLaughlin and I noticed another face to the right of the moss. Although, my husband couldn't see it, both my son and I could see it clearly. Have you ever noticed this before? It looks like a clear picture of a man. I can see the outline of the right side of his head, eyes nose and what looks like a straight mouth. Am I just seeing things or have you noticed this? Also, the night we went on the tour we heard a voice by the elevator, do you think it was Carl Green? The voice we heard by the elevator was heard by everyone on the tour, I only heard it twice and my 14 year old daughter said she heard it a few times before the rest of us. It was kind of a faint yelling. Rocky wasn't sure what it was but seemed very surprised. I'm taking my husband and some friends on the downtown tour very soon.

Last night's tour was great! My family's had ties to Oregon City since the late 1950's, so it was interesting to learn even more history. It's one thing to learn about the Oregon Trail, but it's cool to see another side to the city. Minus the huge crowd and noise downtown, I had a great time, and I look forward to taking another tour. I liked the photos you passed around, and I think it would be interesting to have more to show what Oregon City used to look like, especially for people who don't know anything about the city and take the tours. Keep up the good work!

Your tour was awesome and makes me want to know so much more!  I have a couple of questions and some things to tell you... First off the strong sent of flowers then the story about the woman was very cool… Next... You know how you sometimes didn't say anything when things would happen like when you were cold?? So, when we were on that back trail looking over the mini cliff thing over looking the mill... You were talking and I heard like a old bike sound?? Like the wheels going when you don't pedal? I turned around to see if anyone was there so I could move out of the way and no one was there... Then the next stop you were talking and I felt someone pulling on my hair. It just kind of itched where it felt like it had been touched. Then I put up my hood and kept it up for the rest of the night. Maybe that spirit you think is Carl Green had something to do with this...  So have you heard anything about a bike?  It happened when you were talking about the McLoughlin House. Also I don’t know if this is weird or I’m just crazy but I felt a sense of warmness when we were standing around the grave of Dr. McLoughlin and his wife’s grave... I'm guessing because it kind of seemed like he was a very kind and loving man... I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear more about the Ermatinger House and your stories about the steam boat captain and Lillie. It is very interesting and I'm starting to love hearing these things.  I also read many ghost stories and watch TV shows about them all the time.  And since the stories you tell have to do with the city we live it makes them even more exciting. OH! And did Lillie pick up those flowers?? I want to go into that house and go into that tunnel you talked about but I am way too scared to! If you could please share more of your stories and experiences I would love to hear about them! Thank you so much for everything!

I have lived in Oregon City most all of my 40+ years and on this tour I learned some new things about my hometown. I especially liked the stories that Rocky told along the bluff...about the wreck of the steamboat, the haunted old apartment building, and the first woman murderer in the county. After listening to 2 hours of ghostly tales, I was ready to be thoroughly spooked when Rocky pointed out with his flashlight what looked like the face of Dr. John McLoughlin in a tree trunk behind the historic home. I took a sharp intake of breath when the face appeared to me! Nice and spooky. I'd just recommend that everyone wear good walking shoes because my feet got sore.

We took the walk with the spirits tour last week and loved it! Not only was it informative and fascinating, but the tour guide is extremely knowledgeable regarding local history and also respectful of his subject. Many times we felt the strong presence of spirits and heard things we still can't really explain. Oregon City is a fascinating place, full of legends and rich with stories that make this tour a must do while in the area!

This was a great tour. I've lived in Oregon City for 10 years & learned many new things about it's history as well as it's hauntings. I highly recommend this tour & will definitely do it again. Even witnessed an 'event' with steam coming out of a chimney that goes nowhere in a house that isn't inhabited, at least by anyone that we can see.

If you're not sure if this tour is worth it, don't fear. It's not only really fun but you will learn a lot about Oregon's history. The Tour was GREAT!! My mom is from Bend and I brought her with me, we both had a great time. Rocky did a great job at being very professional, and he definitely had the best stories. I loved learning all the history of a town I have lived in now for 3 years, that I knew nothing of before. The next day, I went to the elevator and took a ride on that and also did the tour of the McLoughlin house. I can't wait to see the Ermatinger house next. I will definitely go on the tour again, and I already have a few friends that can't wait to go with me, thanks for a wonderful tour Rocky!!

My boyfriend and I loved this tour! I appreciated how Rocky was "sticking to the facts." He didn't over dramatize any personal experiences nor did he try to "convert" us to believers. He did a great job mixing fact with myth and never presented a myth as a fact. If nothing else, we came out of there with a new appreciation of Oregon City. I just wish we had a similar program at Sherwood! We definitely plan to take the downtown tour soon! Thank you for such an interesting program!

Rocky, I recently took your downtown ghost tour with several friends. While I grew up in West Linn and have worked in downtown Oregon City for the last seven years, I was familiar with some of the OC’s colorful history. I must admit that your rendition of Oregon City’s haunted history was entertaining and informative. I work in one of Oregon City’s historic buildings downtown and frequently work late nights. I am convinced that our building is haunted by first hand experience and I am comforted to know that this is not the only building on Main Street that has “immortal” residents. Thank you for your time and I will definitely recommend your tours to others.

I went on Rocky’s ghost tour last Saturday and it kicked! I've lived in Oregon City almost most of my life, and I didn't even know half of the things that I learned on the tour about the history of OC. The ghost stories were the best part of the tour. I really liked the one about the little girl and steam boat captain that lives in the Ermatinger house. Over all the tour was a blast, I learned a lot and I am definitely going to be going on the tour again soon. Thanks Rocky!

So, at the end of our tour last night, which ended at the Ermantinger House, It was dark, and there was just a regular shadow on the house from the bushes and everything. Then Rocky started to talk about the Steam Boat Captain. I was looking in the window on the left side of the house, when something in the corner of my eye changed. I looked at the wall next to the window and there was a shadow of, what I would say is a stereotypical steam boat captain. He was tall man with a captain’s hat. It stood out against the other shadows because it was much, much darker. I looked around to make sure it wasn't any one else's shadow, all of our shadows were pointing up 6th street, basically perpendicular the shadow I saw against the house. The shadow also did not move when a car came by with it's headlights on. It disappeared after Rocky was done talking about how the Captain and April kind of try to make sure they're being mentioned.

Our family took the tour last Friday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Funny tidbit: After hearing about the little girl, who has a fascination with ribbons, we got in our car to drive home and I realized my little rainbow ribbon was not hanging on the center mirror. I thought for sure we were ghosted! Next day we found it in the glove box and remembered my son had been playing with it and it had fallen off, so was placed out of harms way! Thanks again for lots of fun!

I wanted to write and tell you that I really enjoyed your tour. I appreciated the emphasis on history of the city while throwing spirits in here and there. I could tell that the history is important to you so I wanted to let you know a couple of things about the McLoughlin House. In 1909 the McLoughlin House was moved from its original location to where it sits now. It was moved with a one horse winch system and it took about 4 days to move the house over the course of one week. Documentation for this information came from the files of the Oregon City newspaper of the time. Moving the house was no easy task especially when you take into consideration that at one point the house was actually wider than the road and the back of the house had to be weighed down to prevent the whole thing falling off the cliff. According to one of the men involved they used sand bags, gravel bags, and cement to counterbalance the house. Thanks again for a great tour!

We wanted to send a little note your way to let you know how much we enjoyed the tour on Friday the 13th (7:30 p.m.). We used to live in the McLoughlin Neighborhood. Your presentation was excellent and we hope that you continue your good work. Thanks again!

Thanks for the great walking tour of historic Oregon City. We really enjoyed it! The Walk with the Spirits tour is a perfect blend of history and paranormal stories. I learned a lot, while at the same time, having goose bumps! Thanks for a great tour!

Hi Rocky; I just wanted to thank you again, as we indicated on Saturday, you did a great job!  I really enjoyed the history and the spiritual references. I completely buy into the belief that everyone leaves an imprint of their time on earth and some are stronger than others. Colleen believes she brought a small child home with us Saturday. It knocked Bens’ shaving cup onto the floor this morning. Also, would it be OK to forward your email address to a coworker?  She knows people who own historic homes and they may be able to provide additional stories. Again, I had a great time and you reengaged my interest in area history. I look forward to additional tours and happenings. Have a great week.

Hi all, I also attended both tours (Walk with the Spirits, Oregon City and the Shanghai Tunnels, Portland) Rocky did a fabulous job in Oregon City and I would encourage everyone to take the tour. The Shanghai Tunnel tour was a great experience also.

Some of the members of TEPS have had a busy weekend. Several of us did the Walk with the Spirits in Oregon City. I know for myself, I really enjoyed it. Rocky did a wonderful job. I will leave it to the other members who attended to tell what they experienced during this walk. For myself I will need to go back to one of the houses and see if I can cause the shadow I saw in the window of the house to appear.
